Okanagan Wine Tour - Kelowna Winery tours and Wine Tastings
Okanagan wine tour can be a little daunting so I will give you a break down of what needs to be seen if you only have two days to visit. Any Okanagan winery tours should first start in Naramata in the morning and then if you have enough time go further and stop in Oliver "The Golden Mile". The next day I would stick around Kelowna and visit our local wineries. There are many wine tour companies based out of Kelowna that can drive you and your group around while you can drink your heart out. It's not worth it to drive yourself around; you will be missing out of the great pleasures of the area and besides this way you have a designated driver!
Every time I need a taste of the Okanagan my favorite wines (red or white) usually come from La Frenz in Naramata. Jeff the wine maker is extremely consistent from year to year and I have yet to find a bad wine from his cellar. Now you need to know this in case you get to meet him - he is Australian so if you meet him one day, keep that in mind when he starts telling you that he has the best wines in the Valley and his German shorthair pointer is the best dog ever. He clearly has two passions in his life and he excels in both! Although I have to say, as a winemaker sometimes he spend too much time in the cellar and the wine fumes can get to him and he can forget that his opinion his not the only opinion even if he comes from Australia: If you are going to stop there, please tell him I sent you, and check out his dog!
In Naramata I also like Joie for their rosé and Lake Breeze for their Pinotage -both wineries produce great wines!
Ii you wish to be in Oliver area you need to tour Borrowing Owl and Tinhorn Creek. Both have great wines, and an amazing view of the Black Sage Bench. In both cases, their wines reflect the extra hot climate that this corridor gets in the summer.
In Okanagan Falls, you need to stop at See Ya Later winery. They are extremely dog friendly and have emerged in the last 3 years as a winery that produce great wines. Ask about the story of why this winery is called "See Ya Later".
In Kelowna I like Quails Gate and Cedar Creek for their great wines and wonderful winery tour of their facilities.
Mission Hill's winery tour is by far the best Okanagan wine tasting tour in the Valley. The architecture alone is worth seeing even if you don't drink wine. The cellar is carved in solid rock and hosts something like 800 barrels. They have a nice little spot down below locked away from people to be able to touch their collection of precious antique vessels dating as far back as 300 BC. They produce a large number of different brands of wine from regular cheap table wines all the way to great exceptional wines. They have a portfolio of wines from past vintages that is really worth asking for and their ice wines are consistently winning prizes. This winery is nothing like other wineries in the Valley, it is well known by wine fans from all over the world as a must see!
